Testosterone and Women

Today, we are going to discuss testosterone and women. Yes, women do have a very small amount of testosterone in their body and they need it.

The biggest cause for testosterone issues in women is something called polycystic ovarian syndrome. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome causes testosterone levels in affected women to be much higher.

The next biggest cause of testosterone issues in women is called Perimenopause. As women age, they go through Perimenopause and Menopause symptoms. This is a very stressful time in a woman’s life. When these stress levels increase, the cortisol levels in your adrenal glands increase as well, and your testosterone levels decrease.

Now, why is this important? Well, testosterone is one of the biggest sex drive indicators and is also one of the biggest indicators of bone density decline. Here at the US Women’s Medical Center, we do tests for testosterone. Most of our patients are on a small level of testosterone therapy to get them to the optimal level for increased sex drive and bone density. As women age, we want bone density to be the best it can be. At the US Women’s Medical Center, we test all hormones, especially estrogen, testosterone, and progesterone. If you qualify for hormone replacement therapy, we will happily get you set up.
